There are no automatic grouping provisions in the GST legislation. If you have more than one entity (partnerships, companies or trusts) in your business group, you will have to account for GST payable and input tax credits on all inter-entity transactions.
You can avoid this by applying for GST group registration. This is available if:
+ The entities concerned are GST registered;
+ They have the same tax periods (all must be quarterly or all monthly);
+ They account on the same basis (all either cash or accruals);
+ They are not members of any other GST group; and
+ There is like ownership throughout the group members or a specific pattern of trust distributions.
If grouping is not available, GST has to be charged on transactions between the entities but the recipient can claim the amount as an input tax credit.
